Carpet
is a key decorative element in the home and a major purchase. You
must keep several factors in mind during your selection.
Location:
You need to answer the following questions. How will the rooms be
used (heavy or light traffic)? Do the rooms have direct access to
the outside? Will the rooms be in direct sunlight? The rooms with
heavy traffic (family room, hallways and steps) select the best carpet
your budget will allow. Carpet will have a five point rating scale.
The higher rating is best suitable for heavy traffic areas. A two
to three rating is good for less traffic areas.
Color:
The carpet color selection is a very personal choice. You will want
to select a color that creates an atmosphere which is desirable for
you. Light colors make the rooms appear to be larger - dark colors
provides a more cozy appearance. The new stain technology makes lighter
colors easy to clean and allows more decorating options. Darker colors
will disguise more stains in high traffic areas.
Cost:
Your budget and needs are the key elements in your carpet selection.
Always try to purchase the best carpet that your budget will permit
in the heavy traffic areas. Medium grade carpet will be suitable for
areas such as bedrooms, guest rooms and moderate traffic. Also, please
require your dealer to give you a complete cost estimate. It should
include the cost for materials, pad, installation, moving of furniture,
hauling away old flooring materials and any other needs required by
you. Please keep in mind that good quality installation will prolong
the life of carpet.
Construction:
Carpet construction describes how the yarn is tufted in the backing.
Cut
Pile:
Loops are level cut leaving individual yarns tuft. Its durability
is achieved with the density of tufts and the amount of twist in the
yarn. It offers a formal appearance. Saxony:
Level finish, pile yarn has more twist with a less formal appearance.
Textured
Surface:
Informal appearance and minimizes foot prints and vacuum marks. Level
Loop:
Loops are the same heights with a less formal appearance. A lot of
the commercial carpet are referred to as level loop. Multi-Level
Loop Pile:
Two to three different loop heights creating a casual appearance.
Fibers:
Ninety-seven percent of all carpet is synthetic fibers. Nylon:
Represents two-thirds of the fibers used. It has the ability to resist
soils and stains. Olefin
(polypropylene):
Strong, resists wear and permanent stains. Many Berbers are olefin.
Polyester:
Luxurious when used in thick cut pile. Good color clarity and retention.
Easily cleaned and resists stains.
Quality
Factors:
The type of fibers and procedure utilized to construct carpet determines
the performance of the carpet. Density:
The pile yarn and tufts in the carpet. The higher the density the
better. Twist:
Winding of the yarn around itself. A tighter twist provides more durability.
Heat-Set:
A process that sets the twist by heat or steam; helps the yarn to
hold the twist over a longer period of time. <Back

How
do I select CARPET CUSHION/PAD?
A
firm carpet cushion is required to form a good foundation, increasing
comfort and extending carpet life by absorbing foot traffic. In most
instances, the life of the carpet depends on the quality of the pad
utilized. Improper selection of carpet pad can accelerate the loss
of appearance, wrinkling, separation and create a breakdown of the
carpet fibers. Residential cut pile, cut and loop, and high-level
loop carpet requires a firm pad with a thickness of 7/16" thick.
